Medicine Hat police lay attempted murder charges in apartment shooting

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The suspect in an officer-involved shooting at a Medicine Hat apartment building nearly two weeks ago has been charged with attempted murder.

The Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS) says, on Saturday, July 27, 2024, a civilian phoned 911, indicating that a gun had been discharged in the building on the 200 block of 8 Street Southwest.

“While officers were standing by the front entrance of the building, a gun was discharged from within the suite, which injured several of the attending officers,” reads a media release from the MHPS.

The officers returned fire and retreated from the building. Several residents were able to get out of the building safely.

Cole Anthony Scory, 30, of Medicine Hat, is charged with four counts of attempted murder with a firearm, assault with a weapon, possession of a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm without a license and other firearms-related offenses.

The suspect remains in stable condition and is in custody. The police officers injured by gunfire are recovering from their injuries.

The police service is asking for anyone who has any information about the incident to contact MHPS major crimes investigators at 403-529-8481.

No further details will be revealed due to ongoing investigations from the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team and the MHPS.
