Lethbridge’s Tanner McLachlan cracks Cincinnati Bengals 53-man roster

A Lethbridge football player is officially on his way to the NFL.

Tanner McLachlan, who was drafted in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, has been selected to the team’s 53-man roster ahead of the 2024 season.

McLachlan, who was born in Lethbridge, graduated high school from the Lethbridge Collegiate Institute in 2017, and enrolled at Southern Utah University to play for the Thunderbirds football team from 2018 until 2021.

After suffering a torn ACL and undergoing surgery, McLachlan continued his college career with the University of Arizona Wildcats by walking onto the football team.

It was with the Wildcats that McLachlan developed into a top receiving threat on the team, racking up 79 receptions for 1,152 yards and eight touchdowns over two seasons. His 79 receptions set the school’s record for most by a tight end, surpassing former NFL superstar Rob Gronkowski.

After being drafted, McLachlan attended the Bengals rookie camp, and played in the preseason for the team, where he hauled in three catches for 42 yards over the course of the preseason.

With him being named to the 53-man roster, McLachlan becomes the first Lethbridge-born player to make the NFL.

The Bengals kick off their 2024 season on the road on Sunday, September 8 with a game against the New England Patriots in Foxborough.
