Lethbridge sees big decrease in water usage from 2023

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge says its efforts to conserve water this year have greatly paid off.

City officials say water usage has decreased 16 per cent this summer compared to the summer of 2024 and is down nine per cent over the five-year average.

Farmers from Lethbridge County are also being recognized for doing their part by making do with less irrigation this season.

Since Lethbridge is in a water-sharing agreement with the Oldman watershed along with many other major water users, city officials are telling residents to continue to conserve water when possible.

As of August 27, the Oldman Reservoir was at 68 per cent capacity, below its normal range of between 77 and 87 per cent for the summertime. The St. Mary reservoir is at 59 per cent when its normal range is 60 and 84 per cent. Lastly, the Waterton reservoir is at the lower end of its normal range: 69 per cent capacity. It’s usually between 69 and 85 per cent full around this time of year.
