Back to school traffic safety tips

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The return to classrooms is just around the corner as students head back to class on Tuesday, September 3, 2024.

With that in mind, drivers are being asked to be cautious about children walking or playing in or around schools.

The Government of Alberta has provided a list of safety tips related to school buses:

  • Use caution and be alert when driving near buses and in school zones.
  • Watch out for alternating flashing amber lights, which means a school bus is slowing to stop where students will either be getting on or off the bus.
  • Slow down and stop when the school bus activates its alternately flashing red lights. This means you must stop whether you are approaching an oncoming bus or following one. The only exception to this rule is when the bus is on the opposite side of a two-way highway that is physically divided by a median.
  • Proceed only when the red lights on the bus have stopped flashing.
  • Watch for school buses loading and unloading children, even if the lights aren’t flashing.
  • Be on the lookout for children crossing the road.

The penalty for failing to stop for a school bus with flashing red lights is $567 and six demerit points.

Communities like Lethbridge and Coaldale have turned all of their school zone speed limits into playground speed limits.

In Lethbridge, that means the lower speed limits are in effect year-round. Drivers should not exceed 30 kilometres/hour from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
