Harvest ahead of schedule in southern Alberta

Farmers in the region are hard at work getting crops out of the ground.

According to the latest Alberta Crop Report, which details the conditions as of Aug. 27, approximately 37.8 per cent of all crops had been combined.

That is ahead of the five-year average of 29.8 per cent and the 10-year average of 25.3 per cent.

The south is currently leading the provincial harvest as just one-fifth of crops have been picked across the province.

Locals have combined 94 per cent of winter wheat, 93 per cent of fall rye, 87 per cent of dry peas and 59 per cent of lentils.

Just over one-third of crops are now “in the bin,” which is about eight per cent ahead of the five-year average.

“Harvesting is in full swing on most crops with good weather conditions,” reads a portion of the report.

At the same time, moisture continues to be impacting farms across the province, which remain below norms.
