COALDALE, AB – A local organization is being recognized for its literary efforts.

Canada’s Premiers have announced the winners of the 2024 Council of the Federation Literacy Award.

Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario and Chair of the Council of the Federation, congratulated the recipients for their outstanding work in advancing literacy and education.

“Thanks to your dedication and hard work, countless Canadians have access to essential literacy skills that will help set them up for long-term success at their workplace and in their communities. Your contributions are deeply appreciated,” says Ford.

The winning group from Alberta is the County of Lethbridge Community Learning Council (CLCLC).

The Coaldale-based organization has provided adult literacy programs to the region since 2015. It serves local communities like Barons, Coaldale, Coalhurst, Diamond City, Iron Springs, Monarch, Nobleford, Picture Butte, Shaughnessy and Turin.

The CLCLC is staffed by two people, Melanie Patenaude and Roxanne Samoleski, who work to support adult learners in providing English Language Learning.

They help newcomers and Low German Mennonites to learn English, navigate Canadian society and engage with the larger community.

Each of the award recipients will receive a certificate signed by their province’s or territory’s premier, as well as a Council of the Federation Literacy Award medallion.
