CROWSNEST PASS, AB – The RCMP is asking all recreators to ensure they are properly equipped to deal with bears.

Officers say they received an emergency SOS activation at 11:19 a.m. on Friday, September 13.

The signal came from the Great Divide Trail near Window Mountain Lake, along the Alberta-B.C. border in southwestern Alberta.

A 45-year-old man from Calgary had been attacked by a bear and had extensive injuries.

He was taken to hospital for treatment via STARS Air Ambulance with the assistance of Crowsnest Fire and Rescue, Fish and Wildlife, and Search and Rescue.

Crowsnest Pass RCMP issued the following statement, “No matter what your experience level is, while exploring the wilderness, SOS devices are an essential tool for anyone who may find themselves in a emergency situation. It is the most reliable way to call for help after sustaining an injury in an isolated area.”

It continues, “Always make sure that you notify others of your planned route, along with your time of departure and approximate return.”
