City unveils new outdoor court at Legacy Park

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The new outdoor sports court in Legacy Park is now open.

The 185 by 85 foot rink features painted lines, side and end boards, screening, players benches and penalty boxes, and is intended for sports like street and roller hockey, roller derby and lacrosse.

However, the City says the court is not intended for biking and skateboarding, and it will not be covered in ice during the winter.

General Manager of Parks Blair Richter says, “The court meets the growing demand for outdoor recreational spaces and serves as a hub for various sports. The facility will draw people from the city and beyond, providing a unique venue for sports participation at all ages.”

The initiative was included in the 2022-2031 Capital Improvement Plan, and was amended in May 2023 to bring it down from two courts to one to keep it in budget.

Community sport groups, including Lethbridge Sport Council, Roller Hockey Lethbridge, the Lethbridge Lacrosse Association and the Lethbridge Roller Derby Guild, were consulted on the project as well.

The court is now open to the public for pick-up games and spontaneous use. It will become available for bookings in summer 2025 for $25 per hour.
