Hurricanes kick off 2024-25 season with home game against Oil Kings

Sep 19, 2024 | 3:12 PM

The Lethbridge Hurricanes are back in action this weekend to kick off the 2024-25 season.

The Hurricanes are hosting the Edmonton Oil Kings at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena on Friday, September 20.

The Hurricanes will likely be shorthanded to begin the season, as core players Miguel Marques, Noah Chadwick, Brayden Edwards and Harrison Meneghin are all at NHL training camps and will likely miss the first weekend of action. Landen Ward, the team’s rookie of the year last season, also was attending NHL rookie camps, but has returned to Lethbridge.

Marques and Meneghin were drafted by Nashville and Tampa Bay, respectively, in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft, while Chadwick was selected in 2023 by the Toronto Maple Leafs. Edwards is at camp with the Detroit Red Wings, while Ward was with the Ottawa Senators.

The Hurricanes recently announced a change to their leadership group as well, with Chadwick taking on the role as Hurricanes captain from Joe Arntsen, who finished his tenure with the team last season.

2024-25 marks the second season for the team under head coach Bill Peters, who led the team to a seventh-place finish in the Eastern Conference with a 33-28-7-0 record.

Lethbridge is looking to continue their streak of making the WHL Playoffs, which they have done every year since the 2015-16 season. However, the team has not been able to continue that success into the postseason in recent years, as they have been swept in the first round the last three seasons.

Following their game against Edmonton, the Hurricanes will head up to Red Deer to face off against the Rebels on Saturday, September 21.

Tickets for Friday’s game and for future games can be purchased here.
