LETHBRIDGE, AB – A man convicted of a real estate investment scam is appealing the decision.

Last month, Ronald James Aitkens, 70, was sentenced to four years in prison for fraud and making false or misleading statements.

The lawyer handling his appeals says the trial judge made findings that were not supported by evidence and that the length of the sentence was excessive.

Through a real estate scheme he ran from 2005-2008, Aitkens collected $35 million from approximately 1,400 investors, including many of his parishioners.

The project involved around 500 acres of land in the Calgary area.
