Blood Tribe releases statement after death of man in Calgary Police custody

The Blood Tribe has released a statement following the death of a Blood Tribe man in Calgary Police Service custody.

Jonathan Lee Wells, 42 died in police custody after he was arrested on Tuesday, September 17, 2024 following reports of a disturbance at the Carriage House Hotel.

Wells went into medical distress and died shortly after.

On Friday, September 27, the Blood Tribe released an official statement:

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team, or ASIRT also launched an investigation into the incident, and found that the man had been punched and hit with a stun gun.

ASIRT, which looks into serious allegations of police misconduct, said its investigation will examine the use of force by the officers.
