Mountain View Cemetery to host inaugural ‘Run to Remember’

Sep 27, 2024 | 11:29 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – On September 29, 2024, the first-ever ‘Run to Remember’ will take place at the Mountain View Cemetery in Lethbridge.

The Parks and Cemeteries team is putting on a run/walk through Mountain View Cemetary with the intention of honouring loved ones while simultaneously promoting community health.

Parks Community Coordinator, Ashley Walker, says, “We are trying to find new ways to encourage the community to visit cemeteries for reasons other than funerals and visiting loved ones. Cemeteries aren’t typically what one would think of as a space to recreate, but we are trying to change that perspective.”

The event will consist of a 5k option or a 2.5k option in order to cater to multiple fitness levels and increase participation. The 5k will do a double loop of the cemetery and begin at 10 a.m. while the 2.5 will do one rotation of the whole pathway and start shortly after at 10:05 a.m.

There will be a moment of silence right before the run to honour people’s loved ones. In addition to that, there will be a board for people to write the names of the people they are running for.

The run is going to be chip-timed and medals will be awarded for the first place male and female in different age categories.

Dogs will be prohibited in the cemetery, and participants are being asked to be respectful and stay on the paved path.

Registration closes on September 28. Race packages will be available at the starting line between 8:45 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. on the morning of the race, Sunday, September 29.
