LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes continued their hot start to the season on Friday, September 27 with a 6-3 win over the Swift Current Broncos.

The Hurricanes came into the game having won their previous two against Edmonton and Red Deer.

In the first period, the game was back and forth with a few opportunities for a majority of the period until the Broncos struck first with a goal from Sawyer Dingman at the 14:36 mark. That held up as the only goal of the period, as the Broncos outshot the Hurricanes 8-6.

The second period started well for the Hurricanes, as they got a powerplay opportunity after a holding penalty. On the man advantage, a scramble in front of the Broncos net led to a loose puck, which Kash Andresen knocked in for his first goal of the season, assisted by Hayden Pakkala and Kooper Gizowski.

However, the tie would not last long, as Broncos forward Luke Mistelbacher scored two goals in under four minutes to take a 3-1 lead heading into the third period. In the second, the Hurricanes took advantage on the shot sheet 17-6 despite being outscored.

As the third period began, it was all Hurricanes for the rest of the game. 1:10 in, Gizowski scored his first of the year from Brayden Edwards and Will Sharpe.

After a bit of rough stuff that saw a fight between Landen Ward and Dawson Gerwing, the latter was assessed a 10-minute misconduct, as well as instigator and kneeing penalties, sending the Canes back on the man advantage. There, Leo Braillard scored his second goal of the year on a rebound, assisted by Edwards and Logan Wormald for the team’s second powerplay goal.

Later on, 7:12 into the period, Hurricanes star Miguel Marques got the rebound on a shot by Noah Chadwick in the slot, wiring a wrist shot past Reid Dyck to make it 4-3. Edwards was once again credited with an assist.

At the 7:49 mark of the third, the Hurricanes found themselves on a long penalty kill after a double minor to Braillard for spearing. That did not deter the team, as they held off attacks from the Broncos, and Andresen responded with a shorthanded goal to take a 5-3 lead. Trae Johnson recorded his first point as a Hurricane with the assist on the goal.

After the Broncos pulled Dyck from the net, the Hurricanes fully iced the game, with an empty netter to give Edwards a four point night, and the Canes a 6-3 victory.

Edwards was named first star, and Andresen the second. Mistelbacher’s two goal effort got him third star honours.

The Hurricanes will look to continue their undefeated streak to begin the season with a game against the Calgary Hitmen on Sunday, September 29.
