LETHBRIDGE, AB – These days, libraries are home to much more than books.

The Lethbridge Public Library (LPL) is gearing up to launch a new communal area where tools and machines can be used to create things.

An official unveiling for the Makerspace is being held at the downtown branch on Monday, October 7, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Resource Sharing Librarian Jonathan Jarvie says guests are able to use tools like sewing machines, a Cricut cutting machine, a heat press or a 3D printer.

“The space is designed so that people can express themselves creatively, and to give the public access to equipment and resources that they may not be able to afford on their own,” says Jarvie. “As the public begins to use the space, we intend to grow the equipment and resources available in order to meet community needs.”

The unveiling event will feature new collections and those in attendance can enter to win a prize by suggesting future items to add to the Library of Things.

The Library of Things has a collection of items that patrons can borrow such as a fishing kit, binoculars, projector, karaoke machine, knitting machine, yard games and sports equipment.

Online Services Librarian Jennifer McDevitt says she is excited to be able to offer more activities for people to enjoy and learn with.

“I hope that the Library of Things will be an ongoing resource for customers dealing with the high cost of living, as well as a collection that exposes people to new technology and sustainable alternatives,” says McDevitt. “Ultimately, libraries are all about sharing, and the Library of Things is another way to do that.”

Items from the Library of Things can be borrowed and returned to the location (downtown of Crossings) where they were held.

Although items cannot be placed on hold, patrons can call the library to set an item aside for same-day pickup.
