COALDALE, AB – Prairie Winds Secondary School in Coaldale held its official grand opening on Friday, October 4, 2024.

The school, which hosts students from grades 7-12, is attached to the new Shift Rec Centre. Construction on the school broke ground in September of 2021, and it is replacing Kate Andrews High School, which first opened in 1961.

Palliser School Division superintendent Dave Driscoll says he is very happy to see all of the hard work pay off.

The school features new additions to cater to all student interests, including an advanced woodshop room, a large theater, independent study spaces, and a room for Esports, among others.

Principal Curtis Uyesugi says since the school year began at the beginning of September, there has been a lot of positive reaction from the staff working in the building, and the students coming in.

Uyesugi also spoke on the unique opportunity afforded by having the school attached to the rec centre, saying that it draws in a lot of community interest in both buildings, and provides a lot of potential activity for the students.

He added, “Really our only limitations are the imaginations of our teachers, and they are doing a great job of taking advantage of all the things that both the rec centre and the school are providing.”

The school currently has just over 600 students, with capacity for 855.
