LETHBRIDGE, AB – Residents of Lethbridge will call for an end to violence against women, girls, two-spirit, and LGBTQQIA+ peoples.

The 18th annual Lethbridge Sisters in Spirit Vigil and Memorial Walk is set to take place Friday, October 4, 2024.

Participants will meet at Lethbridge City Hall at 6:30 p.m. and will talk to Galt Gardens, where a candlelight vigil will be held at approximately 7:00 p.m.

The event is meant to show solidarity with the families who inspired the Sisters in Spirit movement and to honour the lives lost.

Statistics Canada reports that the homicide rate is more than five times higher for Indigenous women compared to non-Indigenous women. Those who are Indigenous women, girls, two spirit and LGBTQQIA+ people are 12 times more likely to be missing or murdered.

More than 100 memorial vigils are set to be held across the country on October 4.
