It turns out they’ve found new life under the Alberta Motor Association, which has shared that it is bringing them back for a good cause.

A number of the Red Deer meters were purchased by AMA and will now be used to collect micro donations for the AMA Community Foundation, around Alberta.

“We know people like to give in different ways, whether it’s donating money, volunteering time, or dropping off nonperishables — so we want to make it as easy as possible,” says Michelle Chimko, president and CEO, AMA.

“Every gift — from spare change at our ‘parking’ meters to larger financial donations online — will help address the dire need at community food banks across Alberta.”

The foundation supports causes such as food security, climate good, childhood safety, and safe communities.

It also puts a twist on the foundation’s Fill Our Fleet holiday campaign, which kicks off today.

To contribute, of course you can put your change into one of the decorated and repurposed meters, or:

  • Shopping AMA’s virtual food drive, which offers a visual expression of the kinds of items your monetary donation will support—everything from baby formula to full-blown food hampers
  • Making a open_in_new monetary gift online
  • Donating money or non-perishables at any AMA centre
  • Booking a free Community Mobilization Kit, which provides everything needed to run your own food drive
  • Donating spare change at any AMA parking meter inside our centres*

To make Albertans’ gifts go even further, AMA will match up to $100,000 in Fill Our Fleet donations.

*Indoor ‘parking’ meters being installed at centres throughout October. Arrival dates vary by location. Vehicle parking at centres remains free!
