LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes bounced back from a loss on Friday, October 11, taking down the Brandon Wheat Kings 5-2 on Saturday.

In the first period, Logan Wormald got the Canes on the board first, burying a cross-ice pass from Shane Smith to take a 1-0 lead. The assist was Smith’s first point as a Hurricane, and Miguel Marques grabbed the second helper.

1:43 later, Cameron Norrie made it a 2-0 game with the first goal of his WHL career at the 5:42 mark from Logan McCutcheon and Gavin Lesiuk.

Following Norrie’s goal, Kooper Gizowski continued his strong start by netting his third goal of the season on the powerplay on a wrister from the top of the faceoff circle.

The Wheat Kings made their first contribution to the scoreboard at the 15:59 mark with a goal from Nolan Flamand, which would end the scoring in the first period at 3-1.

In the second period, the Wheat Kings headed to the powerplay 5:26 in after a hooking penalty against the Hurricanes, and cut the lead to one with a goal from Marcus Nguyen.

However, the Hurricanes did not take long to respond, as Wormald lit the lamp again on a rebound after a point shot by Will Sharpe. The goal was Wormald’s fifth of the year and second of the game, assisted by Sharpe and Smith.

Flamand added another goal with just under two minutes left in the second to finish the period at a 4-3 score for the Hurricanes.

In the third, the two teams had a close hard fought frame, but with no goals for a majority of the 20 minutes. At the 18:55 mark with Brandon’s net empty, McCutcheon fired the puck down the length of the ice and into the open cage, sealing the 5-3 victory for Lethbridge.

Hurricanes goalie Koen Cleaver was strong in the game, stopping 31 of 34 shots he faced. Wormald and Smith were named first and third star, respectively, while Flamand got second star honours.

The Hurricanes will get some rest before their next game, a home matchup against the Prince George Cougars on Friday, October 18.
