Hurricanes fall to Broncos, beat Rebels in two-game weekend slate

Oct 28, 2024 | 8:39 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes came out of their two-game weekend with a win and a loss.

Friday, October 25 vs. Swift Current Broncos

On Friday night, the Hurricanes traveled to Swift Current to take on the Broncos, looking to return to the win column after a loss to the Calgary Hitmen the previous weekend.

The Hurricanes got on the scoreboard first in the game with Miguel Marques netting his second goal of the season from Brayden Edwards and Will Sharpe. They would end the period with a 1-0 lead going into the second.

However, they would not be able to keep up their lead, as the Broncos scored two goals in the second and two in the third to hand the Hurricanes their first back-to-back losses of the 2024-25 season so far.

Saturday, October 26 vs. Red Deer Rebels

Coming off the loss the night before, the Hurricanes returned to Lethbridge on Saturday for a very important matchup on their early schedule.

They were taking on the Red Deer Rebels, who occupied first place in the Central Division, while Lethbridge sat in second. The game was also a special one for the Hurricanes faithful at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena, as the venue was celebrating its 50th anniversary. Prior to the game, the team introduced members of the 1974-75 Lethbridge Broncos and the 1987-88 Lethbridge Hurricanes to the fans, and they wore commemorative jerseys for the game.

Contrary to Friday’s game, the Hurricanes found themselves down 1-0 quickly with Red Deer scoring 1:24 in on the powerplay. The Canes would not be deterred though, and on their own man advantage, Brayden Edwards tipped a shot from Logan Wormald past Rebels goaltender Chase Wutzke to tie the game at one. Noah Chadwick added the secondary assist on the goal.

After another Rebels goal made it 2-1 after the first period, Leo Braillard tied the game up again on another powerplay in the second off a point shot by Chadwick. Miguel Marques continued his point streak by adding the other assist. Later in the frame, it appeared that the Hurricanes had taken a lead with a rebound goal by Landen Ward, but the goal was waved off due to a high stick.

The Rebels would once again grab the momentum, stealing the puck in the Hurricanes end during a penalty kill, and Jhett Carson buried it past Brady Smith to make it 3-2, which would be the score heading into the final 20 minutes.

In the third, after a hard fought first 14 minutes, the Hurricanes got a late surge and would not look back.

It started with Marques wiring a wrist shot past Wutzke at 14:49 to make it 3-3 on his third goal of the season. Around two and a half minutes later, Kooper Gizowski fed a great pass across the Rebels’s open slot right to the stick of Kash Andresen, who buried it for his own third of the season. Logan McCutcheon added the third point on the goal which became the eventual winner.

In the dying minutes, Marques once again found himself on the scoresheet, burying the empty netter to ice the Rebels 5-3. He was named the game’s first star, and Andresen got third star honours. Second star went to Rebels forward Matthew Gard, who assisted on their third goal.

The Hurricanes will have a shorter rest than usual, as they will take on the Broncos again on Wednesday night, this time in Lethbridge.
