Galt Museum & Archives debuts two temporary sport exhibits

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Two new temporary exhibits are up and running at the Galt Museum & Archives.

Game Play and Building a Legacy: The Sportsplex at 50 have both begun their time at the museum. The former is an interactive family-friendly exhibit highlighting sporting history of Lethbridge, including sports like 3×3 basketball, roller derby and esports.

The latter coincides with the 50th anniversary of the VisitLethbridge.com Arena, which was constructed in 1974 for use at the 1975 Canada Games.

Museum curator Tyler Stewart says that the two exhibits connect past sporting history with all the exciting new things happening in the present day.

He also says it was important for Game Play to cover all areas of play.

Building a Legacy: The Sportsplex at 50 features photos and memorabilia from the history of the building. Those include uniforms worn at the 1975 games, along with information about the biggest names that have performed at the arena including Elton John, KISS, Taylor Swift and others.

Stewart says. “Lethbridge would not be the same without this facility. It has brought the community together in so many ways, and we’re excited to showcase many moments that have been part of that story.”

A new school program for students in grades K-6 has also been developed to connect with themes and stories featured in the Game Play exhibition. This program offers a range of interactive activities, including the opportunity to play and learn about Blackfoot games from award-winning interpreter Blanche Bruised Head/Pah’sikowawah’ka (Slow Walker).

An exhibit launch party will be held on Saturday, November 2, from noon until 4:00 p.m., which will include drop-in games and presentations.

Game Play will be on display until March 2, 2025, and Building a Legacy: The Sportsplex at 50 will be up until April 6.
