Hurricanes come back to beat Tigers in high-scoring 7-6 matchup

Nov 7, 2024 | 9:45 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – It was a flurry of goals Wednesday night at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena, as the Lethbridge Hurricanes took on their rival Medicine Hat Tigers.

The matchup saw the return of a familiar face to Lethbridge, as Tigers goaltender Harrison Meneghin was playing his first game against the Hurricanes since being traded on October 5 for forward Shane Smith, who was also playing his former team for the first time.

First Period

In the first, the Tigers struck first after a penalty to Smith, with Jonas Woo firing a point shot past Hurricanes goalie Brady Smith to make it 1-0.

A little over two minutes later, the Hurricanes would score on a point shot from Logan McCutcheon to make it 1-1. It was McCutcheon’s third goal of the season, assisted by Shane Smith and Kooper Gizowski.

The Hurricanes would take their first lead of the game at the 11:22 mark of the first. A Tigers cross-checking penalty put the Canes on the man advantage, until Leo Braillard buried his seventh goal of the season, assisted by Gizowski and Miguel Marques. The goal was Braillard’s sixth powerplay tally of the year, which leads Lethbridge.

Despite taking a 2-1 lead, the Tigers would grab momentum back near the end of the frame, with two goals in under two minutes. Andrew Basha scored shorthanded at 17:59, followed by Gavin McKenna with just 19 seconds left to end the first at 3-2.

Second Period

In the second, the Hurricanes continued the back and forth affair when Logan Wormald fed Brayden Edwards on a 2-on-1, and he ripped it past Meneghin for his seventh of the season. Hurricanes captain Noah Chadwick got the second assist on the goal.

However, the momentum changed suddenly from there, as over the next five minutes and 25 seconds, the Tigers unloaded for three goals. It started with Bryce Pickford’s powerplay tally at 3:19, followed by Oasiz Weisblatt scoring at 5:15, and Hunter St. Martin netting the Tigers’ second shorthanded goal at the 7:40 mark to take a 6-3 lead just under halfway through the game.

Brady Smith was pulled from the Hurricanes’ net following Weisblatt’s goal, and replaced by Koen Cleaver.

Despite the shadow of a 6-3 deficit, Lethbridge responded quickly. Just 1:24 after St. Martin’s goal, the Hurricanes cut the lead to two on the powerplay, with Will Sharpe sending a pass to Kash Andresen in the slot, who fired a one timer into the net for his fourth of the year. McCutcheon added his second point of the night as the secondary assist.

In the last three minutes of the period on another powerplay, Logan Wormald jumped on an open puck and fired it past a sprawling Meneghin to make it a 6-5 game going into the third. Edwards and Marques got assists on the goal.

Third Period

In the third, still down a goal, The Hurricanes penalty kill came up with a big kill, stopping the Tigers powerplay after a penalty to Luke Cozens early in the period.

Building off the momentum, the Canes tied up the game at six apiece 6:29 into the period. Shane Smith entered the zone, fighting off defenders and dropped the puck to Braillard in the slot, who unloaded a slapshot past Meneghin for his second goal of the night. Koen Cleaver, on top of his 12 saves in the third, was given the second assist.

Later on, at the 12:14 mark, the Hurricanes completed their comeback. After a deflected pass from Chadwick landed on Landen Ward’s stick in front of the net, he quickly fed it across the slot to Cameron Norrie, who buried it, cementing himself as his team’s hero for the game with his second career goal.

Lethbridge ran out the clock in the final seven minutes, claiming an intense 7-6 victory over their rivals at home. Norrie was named the first star of the game for his heroics, with McCutcheon getting second star honours. Gavin McKenna, who had three points to bolster his WHL point lead, was named third star.

The Hurricanes will look to make it back to back wins on Friday, November 8 as they travel out to Moose Jaw to kick off a small Saskatchewan road trip.
