LETHBRIDGE, AB – In the first 10 months of this year, Lethbridge had the highest growth in housing starts in the country by percentage.

That is according to new data from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

Between January and October 2024, construction started on 624 houses in Lethbridge.

That is an increase of 209 per cent compared to the same period in 2023, when work began on 202 homes.

This includes 213 single-detached homes (145 in 2023) and 411 other types of residential properties (57 in 2023).

Across Alberta, the CMHC is reporting a 34 per cent increase in housing starts to 37,971.

The first half of this year saw 9,903 new apartments begin construction, the highest of any half-year in Alberta’s history.

Elsewhere in Alberta, housing starts were up by 93 per cent (327) in Red Deer in the first 10 months of this year, 47 per cent in Edmonton (14,796), and 24 per cent in Calgary (20,104).

Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services Jason Nixon says these are all positive indicators of progress being made in the province.

“Alberta is seeing remarkable numbers of new housing starts as our province continues to grow,” says Nixon. “These homes are an investment in Alberta’s future, and we will continue to work with our partners to make sure we continue to increase Alberta’s supply and strengthen our communities for years to come.”

The full report on housing starts can be found on the CMHC website.
