Lethbridge officials remind residents to be careful on ice

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge and Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services are reminding residents of the importance of ice safety.

With the cold weather over the last few weeks, there is a bed of ice over the lakes and ponds in the city. However, City and LFES officials warn that many are not safe to walk or skate on, as the ice is not thick enough.

Warren Molnar with LFES’ Water Rescue team elaborated, saying that sustained cold weather does not automatically mean the ice is safe.

Gary Irvine with the City of Lethbridge Parks department says that crews go out and check the ice levels at city lakes and ponds very frequently, sometimes every day.

Irvine explained that there is a rule for how thick the ice has to be in order for people to go on.

LFES adds that if you happen to fall through the ice, it is important to remain calm, continue breathing as normal, and get horizontal in the water.

They also stress the importance of having someone with you, and pet owners are also asked to make sure their dogs are on a leash to prevent incidents.
