Lethbridge group to plant ‘mini forests’

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A local non-profit is gearing up for a tree and shrub planting initiative.

Environment Lethbridge is set to receive $24,800 from Wawanesa Climate Champions: Local Grants.

Kathleen Sheppard with Environment Lethbridge says they are looking for three sites where they can plant natural, drought-resilient vegetation.

The goal is to showcase alternatives to traditional landscaping in Lethbridge.

“Drought and extreme heat will be important issues for Lethbridge in the future,’ says Sheppard. “This project will show that using native, drought-tolerant plants can allow us to maintain our urban forests and greenspaces, while using less water and providing benefits for all of us and our environment.”

The mini forests are meant to not only converse water, but provide urban shading and wildlife habitats.

Environment Lethbridge says more details will be made available as the project rolls out in 2025.
