LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge’s two largest post-secondary institutions are considered to be among the very best in the country for research.

Research Infosource has released its lists of Canada’s Top 50 Research Universities and Colleges.

The rankings look at the amount of sponsored research income each school gets, the number of researchers, and dollar amounts per researcher.

On the college ranking, Lethbridge Polytechnic was in 11th place nationally, improving from 16th the year before.

The Polytechnic, which is still listed under its previous name “Lethbridge College,” received $9,345,000 in sponsored research income in the 2022 fiscal year, an increase of 32 per cent.

They had 47 researchers with an average of $198.80 per researcher.

The University of Lethbridge (U of L) stayed put at 39th place in the ranking of universities.

The institution had a total of $17,821,000 in sponsored research income, which is down just two per cent from the year before.

The U of L spent $53.5 per faculty member and $25.30 per graduate student.

According to the U of L’s Vice-President of Research Dr. Dena McMartin, graduate student programming and research opportunities are key areas that they support.

“We are unique in that our undergraduate students have opportunities to become involved in research very early in their academic journey and we have made a concerted effort to continue to develop graduate student research so that we can retain those students in a graduate setting, as well as attract top-tier graduate students from other institutions,” says McMartin.

She adds that the U of L also rated well in several other ranking markers, including second place amongst undergraduate schools in International Government Research Income Growth, fourth in Corporate Research Income Growth and fifth in Not-for-Profit Research Income Growth.
