City of Lethbridge celebrates 100 years of women in office
LETHBRIDGE, AB – The City of Lethbridge is marking an important milestone this month.
December 2024 marks 100 years since the first women were elected to office in the city.
In December 1924, Susan Bawden and Mary McClenaghan won election to the Lethbridge Public School Board. The two were unanimously selected by the Local Council of Women as candidates, and won seats in the election on December 9. They were then sworn into office in January 1925.
McClenaghan served on the Board for multiple years, eventually becoming the first woman elected Chair. Bawden served on the Board for 18 years, and had the Susie Bawden School, now called Fleetwood-Bawden School, named after her when it opened in 1951.
