Petersen scores first WHL goal to lead Hurricanes past Blades 2-1

Dec 12, 2024 | 10:35 AM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes extended their winning streak to three games with a 2-1 victory over the Saskatoon Blades on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.

The Hurricanes came into the game a bit shorthanded, as Brayden Yager, Leo Braillard and Vojtech Port have all left the team to attend World Junior selection camps. Yager is at the Canadian camp, while Braillard and Port will represent Switzerland and Czechia, respectively.

In the opening period of the game, neither team managed a goal, but Lethbridge had the advantage on the shot sheet, outshooting the Blades 14-8. Both teams had powerplay opportunities, with the Hurricanes having two, but neither capitalized in the frame.

In the second period, the scoreless contest was finally broken open 4:36 in. With the Hurricanes down a man after a tripping penalty to Brayden Edwards, Logan Wormald fired the puck on net from center ice, rebounding off Blades goaltender Ethan McCallum. Miguel Marques then flew past the defencemen, grabbing the rebound and firing it past McCallum for his 11th goal of the season. Carsen Adair added the second assist on the goal.

Later on, with just over three minutes left in the second, Chase Petersen won a puck battle against Cooper Williams of the Blades in the offensive zone and buried the puck past McCallum for his first career WHL goal and the eventual winner, assisted by Gavin Lesiuk and Logan McCutcheon.

The Blades would add a goal of their own 39 seconds later when Ben Saunderson’s point shot deflected off Tristen Doyle and in to break Jackson Unger’s shutout.

However, Saunderson’s goal would be the only one for the Blades, as Unger added seven more saves in the third period to shut down the top team in the Eastern Conference.

Petersen was named the game’s first star for his milestone night, while McCallum and McCutcheon got second and third star honours.

The Hurricanes will look to continue their win streak on Friday night at the VisitLethbridge.com Arena, when they host the Red Deer Rebels. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
