LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes extended their winning streak to four games on Friday, December 13, beating the Red Deer Rebels 4-1.

The Hurricanes were coming off a 2-1 win over Saskatoon two days prior, where despite the win, they lost forward Miguel Marques with an injury.

In the first, the Hurricanes found themselves shorthanded very quickly, after a crosschecking penalty to Hayden Pakkala just 33 seconds in.

However, despite the disadvantage, they struck first shorthanded with Brayden Edwards toedragging the Rebels defender and wiring a shot past Chase Wutzke to make it 1-0. Shane Smith got the primary assist, while goaltender Jackson Unger was the secondary helper.

Later in the frame, the Rebels would tie the game at one apiece, as former Hurricane Trae Wilke got the puck off a faceoff and beat Unger glove side.

In the second period, neither team registered a goal despite chances for both sides, including a spectacular glove save by Wutzke on a one-timer from Smith. Lethbridge outshot Red Deer 6-3 in the period.

In the third, the Hurricanes managed to break the game open and never looked back. 9:32 in, Kash Andresen fed the puck to Trae Johnson in front, who fought off Rebels defencemen to shove the puck past Wutzke for his second of the season. Grady Pichette got the second assist on the goal, his first WHL point.

A little over two minutes later, the Hurricanes made it 3-1 on the powerplay, with Hayden Pakkala deflecting a shot by Smith past Wutzke for his sixth on the season.

Finally, they would finish off the scoring in the last two minutes after Red Deer pulled their goalie. Logan Wormald fired the puck the length of the ice, into the empty cage for his team leading 17th goal.

Johnson’s winner got him the first star honours, with Smith and Wutzke being named second and third star.

The Hurricanes will continue their busy weekend on Saturday night, traveling to Medicine Hat to face off against the Tigers.
