Hurricanes acquire Caden Price, Anthony Wilson in separate trades

Jan 7, 2025 | 2:20 PM

The Lethbridge Hurricanes have made two more trades ahead of the Thursday, January 9 trade deadline.

On Monday, January 6, the team acquired defenceman Caden Price from the Kelowna Rockets. Price, a 6-foot-tall, 190 pound blueliner, just finished his run with Team Canada at the 2025 World Junior Hockey Championships, where he played with current Hurricane Brayden Yager, for a team managed by Hurricanes General Manager Peter Anholt.

In 27 games for the Rockets this year, Price has scored six goals and added 26 assists for 32 points.

Anholt says adding a guy like Price adds a lot of talent and versatility.

Anholt adds that Price will bring some pre-formed chemistry to the team, as he played with Yager and Noah Chadwick previously before they came to the WHL.

Price, who was drafted by the Seattle Kraken in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, is now one of six Hurricanes affiliated with an NHL team, joining Yager (Winnipeg Jets), Chadwick (Toronto Maple Leafs), Miguel Marques (Nashville Predators), Vojtech Port (Anaheim Ducks) and Jordan Gustafson (Vegas Golden Knights).

In return for Price, Kelowna acquired defenceman Will Sharpe, the rights to goaltending prospect Harrison Boettiger and the following draft picks:

  • Fourth-round pick (2025)
  • Conditional fourth-round pick (2025)
  • Sixth-round pick (2025)
  • First-round pick (2026)
  • Fifth-round pick (2027)

In Sharpe, the Rockets get a 17-year-old defenceman who has put up 27 points in 35 games for the Hurricanes this season, far surpassing his total of 11 points in his rookie season.

Sharpe is an eligible prospect in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft in July, and will join a Rockets team that is set to host the 2026 Memorial Cup.

Anholt says it was hard to trade away a player of Sharpe’s caliber.

Price will not be in the Hurricanes’ lineup on Tuesday night when they face the Moose Jaw Warriors.

In another move, the Lethbridge Hurricanes announced Tuesday morning that they had acquired Anthony Wilson from the Regina Pats in exchange for two draft picks.

Wilson, a 2005-born forward from Swift Current, will join his fourth WHL squad when he suits up for the Hurricanes. In 27 games with the Pats, Wilson has scored seven goals and added four assists for 11 points.

Anholt says he likes Wilson’s physical game.

In return, the Pats received a fourth-round draft pick in 2026 and a sixth-round draft pick in 2027.

Anholt says that with the trade deadline upcoming, he is likely done making moves, but “never say never”.

The Hurricanes enter Tuesday’s game sitting in fourth place in the very competitive Central Division, but sit only four points out of first place. Puck drop is at 7:00.
