The Lethbridge Hurricanes have won seven games in a row after sweeping their U.S. road trip over the weekend.

January 17 vs. Wenatchee Wild

On Friday, January 17, the Hurricanes kicked off their two-game weekend set against the Wenatchee Wild. In the first, the two teams went much of the period without registering a goal, until the Wild broke it open with a goal from Miles Cooper with two minutes left in the frame.

In the second, the Hurricanes tied up the game 1:39 in. Brayden Yager entered the zone and got the puck in deep before feeding a pass to Leo Braillard, who one-timed it from the left-side faceoff circle past Alex Garrett for his 15th goal of the season. Caden Price added the secondary assist.

Just under seven minutes later on the powerplay, Braillard would add his second goal of the game, firing a hard wrist shot off a pass from Yager into the back of the Wild net, assisted by Yager and Noah Chadwick.

After the Wild tied the game up at two goals apiece from a goal by Grant Reid, his first in the WHL, the Hurricanes would add their eventual game winner late in the period. Brayden Edwards deflected a shot from Logan Wormald in front of the Wild net, which re-directed past Garrett for Edwards’ 17th of the season. Tristen Doyle added the other assist on the goal.

In the third period, The Hurricanes scored their final goal with 1:37 left on a 2-on-1 by Edwards and Wormald. Edwards took the shot on the rush, with the rebound bouncing off the pads of Garrett onto Wormald’s stick, who buried his 25th goal of the season to finish the game at 4-2.

Koen Cleaver was solid in net for the Hurricanes, stopping 18 of the 20 shots he faced for his seventh win of the year.

Wormald’s goal and assist got him first star honours, while Braillard was named second star. Reid’s first WHL goal led to him being appointed third star.

January 18 vs. Spokane Chiefs

After the win over Wenatchee, the Hurricanes headed three hours east to Spokane for a heavyweight matchup against the white-hot Chiefs.

Spokane had scored 27 goals in their last three games before taking on the Hurricanes, largely thanks to their superstar trio of Berkly Catton, Shea Van Olm and newly-acquired Andrew Cristall.

The game got off to a quick start, with Spokane finding the back of the net first. Catton scored at the 2:57 mark assisted by Cristall and Van Olm to make it 1-0.

Under a minute later, the Hurricanes got called for a high sticking penalty on Shane Smith, sending them to the penalty kill. Despite playing a man down, Jordan Gustafson managed to spring a breakaway, deking around Chiefs goalie Dawson Cowan to score his second goal of the season and first of the game.

Later in the frame, the Chiefs top line would add more points between them, with Van Olm wiring a wrister over the shoulder of Jackson Unger to make it 2-1, assisted by Cristall and Catton.

In the second, the Hurricanes’ three newest players would team up to tie the game at two. Anthony Wilson took a pass from Caden Price at the blueline and fed it across to Gustafson, who fired it past Cowan for his second of the game. The goal marked Wilson’s first point with Lethbridge after being acquired from the Regina Pats.

No more goals were scored in the second period, with Unger stopping 16 shots by the Chiefs to keep the game even.

In the third period, Lethbridge took a 3-2 lead 8:17 in when Logan Wormald fed a cross-ice pass to Logan McCutcheon on a 2-on-1, who then put the puck past a sprawling Cowan for his seventh of the season. Brayden Edwards added the second assist.

Then, in the final minute of the game, Gustafson would cap off his big night with an empty-net goal, scoring a hat trick in just his third game with the Hurricanes. Yager and Tristen Doyle added the helpers on the insurance goal, as the Hurricanes took down Spokane for their seventh straight win.

Gustafson was named first star of the game for his hat trick, with Catton and McCutcheon rounding out the three.

The win wrapped up a five game road trip for the Hurricanes, who will return to Lethbridge on Wednesday, January 22 to face the Regina Pats.
