Magnitude 4.5 earthquake detected near Lake Louise

Earthquakes Canada is reporting there was a 4.5 magnitude earthquake which struck 30 km ENE of Lake Louise Sunday morning.

The quake was detected at 4:39 a.m. with a depth of 1.0 km, and was lightly felt in both Lake Louise and Banff.

No reports of damage have been received.

The largest quake in the area, according to Earthquakes Canada, happened in February 1918. There have been several between 3.9 and 5.0, including on Dec. 28, 2024 (3.9) and July 24, 2024 (4.2).

Others occurred in 2021, 2019, 2001, 1997 and 1984.
