Southern Alberta groundwater to be mapped as demand rises
As the demand for water continues to increase in the region, officials want to get a better idea of where our groundwater is.
The Government of Alberta has announced $3.8 million in funding for the Alberta Geological Survey. They will complete a three-year study mapping the quality, quantity and locations of groundwater across southern Alberta.
Minister of Environment and Protected Areas Rebecca Shulz says that by better understanding the groundwater, the province can make the most out of every drop to support families, businesses, farmers, ranchers and the environment.
“With growing communities and a thriving economy driving increased demand for water in Alberta, it’s more important than ever that we ensure we have a good understanding of all our sources of water, including groundwater,” says Shulz. “The results of this study will help ensure we are effectively managing our groundwater and improving the drought resilience of our communities and economy.”
