Lethbridge Fire and Emergency services offering tips for cold weather

Feb 5, 2025 | 1:16 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services is offering tips for the public to deal with the very cold weather.

This week has been the coldest of 2025 so far with temperatures staying in the minus 20 range, with wind chills reported as low as minus 36.

With the cold front, Lethbridge and area residents are doing what they can to beat the heat, and LFES is making sure they are doing that in a safe manner.

Chief Fire Marshall Troy Hicks says it is very important that residents avoid trying to heat up their homes using the stove or oven.

LFES adds to keep anything combustible at least one metre away from all heaters, fireplaces and wood stoves. If you have a fireplace or space heater, establish a one-metre “kid-free zone” to prevent burns and accidental fires.

In addition to heating homes, the cold weather means that many people are plugging in their cars when not in use. Hicks says it is important to make sure your cords are in good condition before you do.

Hicks also stressed that it is very important to make sure your vehicle is outside if your garage before starting it due to carbon monoxide risks. Carbon monoxide detectors and smoke detectors should be checked every month.

He also reminded residents to always keep their cell phones charged if they are out and about, and advises motorists to keep their gas tank at least half full.

With the Family Day long weekend coming up, many people are likely traveling, and Hicks says that even if you are going somewhere warmer, you should bee prepared for the worst and keep warm clothes in the car.

The City of Lethbridge has more information about fire and winter safety on its website.
