4,460 BREAK INS IN 2024

Alberta RCMP offers security tips for business owners

Feb 6, 2025 | 11:21 AM

The Alberta RCMP is reminding business owners across the province to consider crime prevention practices to reduce theft and damages.

In 2024, Mounties say there were 4,460 reports of business break and enters across Alberta RCMP jurisdiction.

The RCMP is providing the following tips for business owners to mitigate their risk:

  • Install an alarm system and ensure it’s armed at the end of each day.
  • Invest in good quality cameras that provide full coverage of the space, or points of entry at minimum.
  • Ensure there’s appropriate interior lighting that can be left on to provide optimum visibility, and install exterior motion lighting to deter thieves from the outside.
  • Keep track of all keys or fobs that access your commercial property.
  • Keep windows clear of posters or stickers and consider installing roll shutters or bars for added protection.
  • Ensure valuables are secured and away from windows after hours.
  • Consider investing in fences for extra protection and ensure they are well maintained.

Police recommend budgeting for security measures like sturdy locks, quality cameras and an alarm system as they can pay themselves off in the long run by making the difference in preventing theft and identifying criminals.

The RCMP has brochures about business security available for free at all detachments.

Alberta RCMP encourages the public and business owners to report any suspicious activity.
