It used to be the standard way for many residents of Coaldale to get to and from the local golf course, but new rules will allow it once again.

Coaldale Town Council approved its Golf Cart Bylaw at its regular meeting on Monday, February 3, 2025.

It allows residents in the Fairway Drive, Westgate and Cottonwood areas to drive their golf carts to the Land-O-Lakes Golf and Country Club.

The municipality had a golf cart bylaw dating back to 1987, but it was repealed in 2022 after discovering inconsistencies with the Government of Alberta’s Traffic Safety Act.

The Town of Coaldale then advocated to the province for an amendment to the Act to remedy the situation.

In October 2024, the Alberta Government announced a five-year pilot project that would allow for the use of golf carts on select roads in communities. It requires local governments to pass their own bylaws that detail which roads golf carts can driven on.

Mayor Jack Van Rijn thanked Taber-Warner MLA and Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen for listening to the town’s concerns.

“By participating in this pilot project, residents living in neighbourhoods adjacent to the golf course will be able to drive their carts to and from the course – without having to fear being ticketed by local law enforcement,” says Van Rijn. “As I said in October, this truly is a win for everyone involved – Coaldale residents, municipal enforcement officers, our local golf course, Coaldale Town Council, and the Government of Alberta.”

The owners of golf carts in the specified neighbourhoods will need to apply to have their carts registered. In addition to your personal information, the forms ask for details about the golf cart, insurance, a list of people who will be authorized to drive it, and a $100 permit fee.

Once a person’s permit has been approved, it will need to be attached to the golf cart and be clearly visible.

Details on the Golf Cart Bylaw can be found on the Town of Coaldale website.

Information on the golf cart pilot project is on the Government of Alberta website.
