Hurricanes fall to Hitmen 3-2 in overtime

Feb 12, 2025 | 11:28 AM

The Lethbridge Hurricanes had their winning streak snapped at three games last night, falling 3-2 to the Calgary Hitmen in overtime.

The game between the two once again had a high level of importance for the standings, as Calgary was just three points ahead of Lethbridge going in.

In the first period, the Hitmen hit the ground running, with Oliver Tulk capitalizing on a turnover in the Hurricanes zone and beating Jackson Unger just 35 seconds in.

Later in the frame, the Hurricanes tied up the game with 1:23 left. A rebound in front of the net ended with the puck on Brayden Edwards’ stick. He then fed a pass to Luke Cozens, who buried his third of the year.

The first period belonged to Unger, as the Hitmen peppered him with 20 shots, but he stood tall, allowing only the one goal in the frame.

In the second, Calgary took a 2-1 lead late in the period with Ethan Moore scoring after forcing a neutral zone turnover.

Heading into the last frame, the Hurricanes needed a goal to keep afloat, and it seemed like Brayden Yager had tied it with 6:36 left after knocking in an open puck in Calgary’s crease. However, after a lenghty review, it was called a no-goal despite the referee on the ice originally saying the opposite.

However, Yager would respond shortly after, weaving around defenders and firing home a wrist shot past Daniel Hauser for his 21st goal of the season, assisted by Shane Smith and Caden Price. Shots were 7-7 in the third.

Regulation time would solve nothing, so the two teams headed to overtime.

In the extra frame Tulk played the hero for Calgary, ripping in his 32nd goal of the year and second of the game 1:40 in.

Tulk and Moore were the game’s first two stars, while Unger got third star honours for his 37 save performance.

The Hurricanes will return to the VisitLethbridge.com Arena on Wednesday, February 12 when they host the Red Deer Rebels.
