The largest farm technology show in southern Alberta is now underway.

Ag Expo kicked off Wednesday morning at the Agri-food Hub and Trade Centre in Lethbridge, running daily until Friday.

Paul Kingsmith, Director of Community Engagement for Lethbridge & District Exhibition, says there are more than 300 vendors this year, including farmers, equipment manufacturers, salespeople, marketers, researchers and much more.

He adds that it is one of the few events where every single conference hall and meeting room within the facility is packed.

Kingsmith told media at the kickoff event that agriculture, despite having many branching sectors, is a very tight-knit community

“To get everybody here under one roof and to be talking agriculture all at the same time – it’s where relationships are made, it’s where business is done. It’s a great chance for people to connect with a wide variety of people within the industry,” says Kingsmith.

The Ag Expo includes representatives from five countries and three different continents.

Kingsmith adds, “No matter where you’re from, [members of the agriculture sector] they’re all doing the same job and you’re able to share ideas and connect in that way, so to have a show like that that brings these companies here to Lethbridge, it’s such a testament to the community in southern Alberta.”

A new addition this year is the Double C Ag Co Machinery Row, an outdoor exhibit area in the south parking lot that features the latest in heavy-duty farm equipment.

Other highlights for Ag Expo include:

  • The North American Seed Fair, one of the continent’s largest and last remaining seed showcases.
  • The Dish, an exclusive, hospitality-style event. This session will provide producers with essential insights on key challenges facing the industry and insights into agriculture risk management.
  • The thinkAG Career Fair, where students in grades 9 – 12 are invited to participate in a one-of-a-kind career experience where they learn how their unique interests align with the agriculture industry through participation in interactive, thought-provoking explorations.

“Youth is such an important part of agriculture and they truly are the future, so to team with someone like Ag For Life and get the thinkAG Career Fair here is just a great way that you can start to introduce young people to the idea of what a career in agriculture can look like,” says Kingsmith.

Kingsmith adds that the Ag Expo typically draws between 6,000 to 10,000 guests. Given the much larger scope of this year’s convention, he expects attendance to be on the higher end.
