A Coaldale veterinarian has been awarded the prestigious “2024 Vet of the Year” title in Alberta, recognizing her contributions to animal care and her dedication to the community.

Dr. Melissa Wallace, the lead veterinarian at the Coaldale Pet Clinic, was honored by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). This award is given out annually to Albertan veterinarians who display remarkable dedication to veterinary medicine.

“I’m incredibly proud and honored to be recognized. It’s a reflection of not only my efforts but also a reflection of the amazing team that I get to work with every day,” Wallace says.

Dr. Wallace has been working in Coaldale since 2006 and says her passion and interest in animal care began in Southern Ontario after watching a C-section being performed on a cow when she was 12 years old. Realizing her love and interest in animals, she decided to pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

After completing her education at the University of Guelph, Melissa headed west to work with livestock veterinary services and join the Coaldale clinic.

Even with both practices, Dr. Wallace has extended her knowledge and as of October 2023, she became the first Certified Hospice and Palliative Care Veterinarian in the Lethbridge area. This allows elderly pets in the Lethbridge region to live happier and healthier lives.

Additionally, she said that being able to make long-lasting relationships with members and animals of the community is a huge piece to why she loves the work she does around the region.
