Alberta announces funds for school projects in Lethbridge & Brooks

The Government of Alberta has announced more details on a few new school projects in the region.

While the exact dollar amounts were not specified, the Ministry of Education will provide funding to the Lethbridge School Division to plan for a new K-5 elementary school on the west side.

A spokesperson for the Lethbridge School Division says this is exciting news for a quickly-growing section of the city.

“A new elementary school in the south end of west Lethbridge has been identified as the Division’s No. 1 request for new school construction, due to the enrollment pressures we are currently experiencing on that side of the city, along with expected future developments on the westside,” reads a statement from the Lethbridge School Division.

Planning funds were also announced for a high school within Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools in Brooks.

As well, the Brooks Composite High School will undergo a modernization initiative.

LNN has reached out to the school divisions in Brooks for comments.

Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides says the province is taking action to address the challenges facing communities outside of metro Calgary and Edmonton.

“While some schools in rural Alberta are getting older and need to be modernized or replaced, other communities are experiencing growing enrolment. I’m proud to say our Budget 2025 commitment addresses both challenges – and this is just the beginning,” says Nicolaides.

The 2025 Capital Plan allocates $75 million over the next three years for the planning and design of the 41 school capital projects approved in 2025, as well as $2.3 billion to building and updating previously announced school projects.
