Lethbridge Polytechnic launches program honoring Blackfoot culture and Truth & Reconciliation

Lethbridge Polytechnic is introducing a new program, A’paitsitapisksinimaattsaa (Weasel People Education): Learning from Blackfoot Identity and Relationships, starting in Fall 2025.

The new program is designed to help students connect with Blackfoot culture, history, and land-based learning.

The Polytechnic says the program aims to deepen students’ understanding of the cultural, historical, social, and political experiences of the A’paitsitapi (Weasel People), also known as the Blood Tribe or Akainaiw, on whose unceded lands Lethbridge Polytechnic resides.

Lethbridge Polytechnic professor Marcia Black Water says, “When we know the land, we know its stories, and that’s what teaches us and guides us.”

Students will learn in a supportive environment that embraces Blackfoot ways of knowing, being, and doing.

The program includes cultural activities, mentorship from Blackfoot Elders and knowledge-keepers, and opportunities for personal growth. It also aims to help students explore their interests, set goals, and prepare for further education or careers.

It offers an eight-month General Arts and Science certificate, giving students the chance to learn more communication skills, collaboration, and writing skills while aiming to prepare them for post-secondary education and employment.
