After a few weeks of warmer weather in southern Alberta, the RCMP is asking people to stay off of the ice.

On Sunday, March 9, Nanton RCMP says it was called to the Chain Lakes Reservoir, approximately 43 kilometres west of Nanton.

An ice fishing structure had broken through the ice on the lake and several people were seen trying to get it out.

“Nanton RCMP would like to remind the community that entry onto the lake ice at this time of year could be potentially dangerous and checking ice conditions is recommended,” reads a media release from Nanton RCMP.

Officials also recommend bringing safety gear including ice picks, floatation devices and warm identifiable clothing.

ABConservation.com reports ice thickness measurements and whether or not certain lakes are safe to ice fish on.

The City of Lethbridge also measures ice thickness for water bodies in its jurisdiction.
