Medicine Hat public education support workers vote against labour deal

Mar 12, 2025 | 1:59 PM

Medicine Hat’s public education support workers have voted not to ratify a proposed labour agreement.

The vote was originally delayed after Local 829’s executives were removed by the national CUPE leadership.

The Medicine Hat Public School Division acknowledges the “no” vote creates uncertainty but says the decision reflects the concerns and priorities of the workers.

School division superintendent Tracy Hensel says the proposed deal “offered a fair and competitive package.”

The negotiating committee plans to meet again with the new union bargaining committee to evaluate options for further negotiations and prepare for potential next steps.

“We are prepared to return to the negotiating table with the union to better understand their concerns and find a mutually agreeable solution,” Hensel says.
