Parks Canada extends watercraft restrictions in Waterton for 2025

Mar 12, 2025 | 11:27 AM

Parks Canada is continuing its effort to prevent the spread of invasive species in Waterton Lakes National Park by maintaining restrictions for 2025.

These restrictions aim to protect regional waterways from invasive mussels and whirling disease, which can pose serious environmental and economic risks.

The restrictions include:

  • Non-motorized watercraft from outside park boundaries will still be prohibited, a policy introduced in 2024 that has proven effective in reducing AIS risks.
  • Seasonal permits are available for watercraft stored within the park, with mandatory AIS training and inspections.
  • Motorized boats will continue to undergo a 90-day quarantine to prevent AIS introduction, a program that has been successful in safeguarding park waters.
  • Fishing will be allowed in Cameron Creek and the Waterton River, but the Belly River remains closed due to whirling disease. Visitors are urged to follow strict protocols for cleaning fishing gear and watercraft.

Parks Canada is also recruiting volunteers for its AIS Prevention Ambassador program and encourages everyone to help by cleaning, draining, and certifying all water equipment before use in the park.
