A University of Lethbridge student has launched a new website designed to tackle food insecurity and food waste on campus.

SnackRadar, created by Ankit Mukherjee, connects students with free food from campus events in real time, aiming that food doesn’t go to waste.

Mukherjee’s initiative has gained traction among students and event organizers, addressing two issues: the rising cost of living for students and the amount of leftover food from campus events.

Ankit Mukherjee, says, “Knowing that SnackRadar is helping address food insecurity and reducing waste keeps me motivated to keep improving and expanding the platform.”

His idea earned him a $1,000 prize after securing third place at the Launchpoint Pitch Competition, hosted by the University of Lethbridge and Community Futures Lethbridge.

The platform is accessible at snackradar.ca.

Recent data from Food Banks Canada’s HungerCount 2024 report highlights the growing issue of food insecurity nationwide.

In 2024, there were over two million visits to food banks in Canada, the highest number in history, representing an increase of six per cent compared to 2023 and a 90 per cent increase compared to 2019.

For students in need of additional food support, The University of Lethbridge Student’s Union (ULSU) is another resource available.
