IMPAIRED DRIVING PREVENTION WEEK

Mounties reminding motorists of the dangers of impaired driving

The Alberta RCMP are reminding drivers of the consequences of impaired driving due to alcohol, drugs, fatigue or distraction, all of which could have devastating consequences.

Canada is recognizing March 16-22 as National Impaired Driving Prevention Week this year, and the RCMP would like to remind Albertans of the following:

  • Police say impaired driving, whether by drugs or alcohol, kills or injures more Canadians than any other crime. Alcohol and drugs, including cannabis and prescription medications, can impact a driver’s judgement, coordination and reaction time.
  • Driving tired can be just as dangerous as driving under the influence. At 100 km/h, a vehicle can travel 150 meters in just six seconds. At this speed, a driver’s eyes only need to be closed for three or four seconds to have potentially disastrous consequences.
  • Distracted driving can also put yourself, your passengers, and everyone else on the road at risk. Police say texting, switching songs, or adjusting a GPS may seem harmless, but could still result in a collision in the one moment your attention isn’t on the road.

“Impaired driving doesn’t just apply to cars — it also applies to motorcycles, boats, ATVs, snowmobiles, and other off-highway vehicles (OHV),” says Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic. “No matter what, you should never operate a motorized vehicle while impaired, and you should do everything in your power to be alert behind the wheel. If you suspect someone is driving impaired, call 911.”

Mounties ask residents to plan ahead and arrange a safe ride home. “Impaired driving is not just a legal issue — it’s a matter of life and death,” they add.
