Canadian teenager Erin Brooks places third at World Surf League event in Portugal
PENICHE — Canadian teenage surfer Erin Brooks finished third at the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal after losing to American Gabriela Bryan in semifinal action Sunday in the third event of the season on the World Surf League’s elite Championship Tour.
Brooks, 17, finished with a score of 11.63, behind Bryan’s 11.83. Bryan, a 22-year-old from Hawaii, was then beaten by Olympic champion Caroline Marks of the U.S. in the final.
Brooks had upset American Caitlin Simmers, the world No. 1 and defending World Surf League champion, on Monday to advance to the semifinals. But weather conditions delayed the semifinal until Sunday.
Brooks won her opening heat, outscoring Australian Molly Picklum and Brazil’s Luana Silva, before dispatching American Lacey Peterson in the round of 16 to gain the quarterfinal.
