City of Lethbridge implements new turning signal system

Mar 24, 2025 | 1:42 PM

The city of Lethbridge is implementing a new traffic flow improvement plan at the intersection of 13th Street North and 5th Avenue North.

Starting March 25, alternating left turn signals will be introduced, allowing both northbound and southbound traffic to safely turn left in alternating cycles.

Currently, only northbound traffic has a dedicated left turn signal. Under the new system, one cycle will give northbound drivers the flashing green arrow to turn left, followed by a cycle for southbound drivers.

This change aims to improve traffic flow, provide clear turning opportunities in both directions and increase safety at the intersection.

The new signals will be active during the following hours:

  • Weekdays: 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Weekends: 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

If successful, this will be the first of several intersections in Lethbridge to use alternating left turn signals. For more information, residents can contact 311 during business hours.
