A new exhibition has opened at the Galt Museum & Archives in Lethbridge, aiming to spark conversations about racism and bias.

Behind Racism: Challenging the Way We Think is a traveling exhibit developed by the Ontario Science Centre with research and content by the Canadian Race Relations Foundation.

The exhibit, which runs until the first week of October, takes an interactive approach to a serious topic.

“This isn’t a passive experience,” says Tyler Stewart, curator at the Galt Museum. “There are hands-on activities, games, and challenges that might flip your brain in an interesting way or make you reconsider certain beliefs. It explores how our brains form biases and how we can become more aware of them.”

According to Stewart, the goal is not to accuse but to engage.

“We want to call people in and say, ‘Let’s think about how racism happens in our community and what we can do about it.’ This exhibit offers solutions and actions that individuals can take in their daily lives.”

The Galt Museum selected Behind Racism as part of its effort to balance locally focused exhibits with those addressing broader social issues.

Visitors can engage with interactive elements designed to illustrate how biases are formed and how they influence daily interactions.

The exhibit presents information on the psychological and social factors that shape perceptions, encouraging reflection on how individuals process information and make decisions.

By examining these patterns, Behind Racism aims to create conversations about the ways biases develop and how awareness can help challenge them.
