KINDERGARTEN TO GRADE THREE

One-time funding added for reading, writing and math screening supports

Alberta’s government is providing one time funding of $7.5 million to help make sure schools have the resources and staff needed to conduct the additional reading, writing and math screenings it began this year.

This is in addition to the $10 million allocated for reading, writing and math support this next school year. If passed, Budget 2025 also invests more than $40 million into school boards for these supports over the next three years.

“Basic skills like reading, writing and math are key to student success. This funding will help schools identify students that need help the most and get them the extra help they need,” said Minister of Education Demetrios Nicolaides.

This year, schools began additional screenings for reading, writing and math skills for students in Kindergarten to Grade Three in an effort to make sure no child slips through the cracks.

The Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) issued a statement in response to the March 27 announcement, stating the much-needed funds are welcomed.

Teachers already identify students who need specialized supports, making their involvement as partners in education invaluable,” said Jason Schilling, ATA president. “We know that proper direction is needed for this money to have a lasting impact, and teachers can provide that direction.”

He added, the ATA would appreciate an opportunity to collaborate with the ministry on how best to distribute these funds and bring practical teacher insight to the table.
