“I believe that, in 2025, the environment should absolutely be in every conservation we’re having in a national economy that is based in resource extraction.”

Those are the words of Amber Murray, Lethbridge’s candidate for the Green Party of Canada in the federal election.

Murray has experience in project and personnel management, particularly in areas like landscaping.

She says she was inspired to join the election campaign due to the ongoing debate over the development of coal mines in Crownsest Pass.

“I was so devastated that our provincial government, at the time, was attempting to mine coal in our headwaters.”

Murray wrote to Cardston-Siksika MLA Joseph Schow in 2021, as she used to live in that riding, and says she received a dismissive answer that said Canada has strong environmental protections. She reportedly received a similar response from Lethbridge MP Rachael Thomas.

It was when she heard back from then-Green Party leader Elizabeth May that her political ambitions took shape. May was part of an effort to stop the creation of the region’s new proposed coal mines.

“I thought it would be a good idea to have someone who was willing to defend that in this race. We do need a federal backstop,” Murray says.

Her other top priority is electoral reform. Murray believes that if Canada implemented proportional representation in 2015 when the Trudeau Liberals campaigned on it, the country’s political landscape would be very different.

Murray says more people support the Green Party of Canada and what it stands for than the seat count in the House of Commons might suggest.

The federal election is set to be held on April 28, 2025.
